Profile in Caring: Dr. Joey Rottman
Weightlifting and bodybuilding have always been an important part of Dr. Joey Rottman’s life. Growing up poor in Miami, Joey spent more time in the gym than he did with academics until his high school algebra teacher motivated him to become an "A" student. Once in medical school, however, he turned to food to relieve the stress. His weight soared and he became diabetic. To reclaim his health and still relieve stress, Joey returned to bodybuilding and later to improvisational theater. He is no longer on medication for his diabetes – something he credits to diet and exercise. Dr. Rottman is both a practicing OB/GYN and a board certified Osteopathic Practitioner. He approaches his work seriously, but with a touch of humor and compassion.

Profile in Caring: Elton Fennell, MD
It is a long way from Yemassee, South Carolina to Lawrence, Massachusetts, not just in miles but also in the pace of life. Yemassee, a rural community in the southern most region of the Carolinas, is where Dr. Elton Fennell spent his youth. There were fewer than 200 families residing in Yemassee when Elton grew up there. His Southern roots are evident in his quiet reserve and genuine warmth, which he brings to his practice here in Lawrence. Since joining our medical staff this past January, Elton has improved patient access to expanded OB/GYN services by offering his skills at all four clinic sites.

MDPH Presents Commissioner’s Leadership Award
Calling it a high honor, GLFHC Chief of Quality Management and Research Dean Cleghorn received the MA Department of Public Health Commissioner’s Leadership Award at last fall’s statewide Ounce of Prevention conference. The annual award recognizes a single individual who displays excellence in promoting health equity and eliminating health disparities. In accepting the award, Cleghorn said he was especially humbled by this recognition after being nominated by his colleagues in Lawrence. "I am grateful to have played a part in the collective work of everyone at GLFHC and our partner organizations. By collaborating together, the Latino CEED program has shown a significant improvement in health equity among Latinos living with diabetes. Through this work, which includes outreach and education, the people of Lawrence have learned to better manage their own health."
